Earth Lagoon Mývatn

The Earth Baths in the Mývatn region are currently undergoing a major expansion, and in addition to expanding the building from 1100 square meters to approximately 4000, the baths have recently unveiled a new name and logo. “We wanted to bring the English name closer to what the baths are called in Icelandic, but we will remain Jarðböðin. The English name was changed from Mývatn Nature Baths to Earth Lagoon Mývatn,” says Guðmundur Þór Birgisson, Managing Director of Jarðböðin.

“We didn’t think Nature Baths was descriptive enough for the place, and we’ve been working on choosing a new name in English for some time. It was ideal to introduce it alongside the changes and expansion of the place. With this, there’s such a new sign, and so I’ll take the opportunity to explain its appearance, the idea comes from the unique geological formations in the area called tuff sticks. There are a kind of ash layers that can be seen very well, for example, north of Hverfjall/fell,” says Guðmundur.

The current premises with the restaurant, reception and changing rooms will be removed, but construction on the new premises has been ongoing for over two years and the new Jarðböð is scheduled to open next April. It will be closed on January 1st for the construction and will reopen in the spring. “These are big changes for us, we are moving completely to new premises,” says Guðmundur. “One of the new things is that in addition to offering considerably more space in the changing rooms – there will be three different rooms available. Or maybe three different experiences, to be more precise.”

“There will be a traditional changing room, but there will still be more space than in the current facility and an option to use a closed shower, for those who want it. Then there will be the so-called Core Experience, but that room will be in the spirit of a new name – a lot of the geological formations and lava are used in the room that will be buried and the outer walls of the room and the partition are lava walls. There is also a very beautiful lava wall that welcomes guests and leads into the rooms.”

Demand has increased considerably for luxury experiences at the Thermal Baths, but Guðmundur says that the third option, the Tranquil Experience, is designed to meet this group of tourists. “We have six private cabins, each for two guests. Those who purchase access to these cabins get access to a private lagoon. This package also includes access to a fireplace lounge with a rest and relaxation room.”

“The new restaurant at the Thermal Baths will have an updated menu, in addition to a special menu available for guests of the Tranquil Experience. We will continue to have soup, bread and salad, but it will also be possible to order light dishes from the menu,” Guðmundur adds in conclusion, but he says that there is great excitement among the staff, now that the end of the construction is in sight and the opening of the brand new Thermal Baths is getting closer.
