The Chess club Godinn, was founded on March 15, 2005 and will therefore be 20 years old in March 2025. At this juncture we will launch an open anniversary tournament. It will take place on March 13-16 at Skjólbrekka in Lake Myvatn area which is world famous for its breathtaking nature and hospitality.
We are certain that participants will enjoy them self, both in the tournament itself and also because of the surrounding. And we hope that our fellow chess players in Great Britain and Iceland will join us over a game of chess. And celebrate with us this achivement.
Twelve passionate chess players founded the club back in 2005 and it has grown and prospered as one of the largest chess clubs in Iceland outside of the Reykjavík capital area. Today, there are 94 members, making Godinn the 11 largest chess club in Iceland. And its activity has been uninterrupted since. And it is an remarkable achivement in this wide spread area where Godinn is located. Members have been active to join practice tournaments once a week during winter time. And also participate in tournaments when the opportunity arises.
The name Godinn comes from the old pagan religion, meaning God. It is common denominator for all the Gods in paganism. Refers to Odinn, Thor, Loki Freyja and Sif. Just to mention few. The route to Lake Myvatn from Akureyri is being driven past the waterfall Goðafoss, where the remnants of the idols from the paganism was thrown into the waterfall in the year 1000 A.C. That year Iceland took Christianity.
