GM Vignir Vatnar Stefánsson
Registration in Sel Hotel/Mývatn Öl chess tournament is off to a good start. Registration opened on March 1st and there are already 13 players registered to the tournament, although there are about 8 months until the tournament starts. Of these 13 players, 4 are GM´s and 3 are IM´s.
The Icelandic chess champion 2025, GM Vignir Vatnar Stefánsson, is the highest rated player in the tournament (2511). English GM Simon Williams (2443), GM Þröstur Þórhallsson (2388) and GM Bragi Þorfinnsson (2377) are also registered for the tournament.
In addition, three international masters are registered for the tournament, Dagur Ragnarsson, Björn Þorfinnsson and Davið Kjartansson. All of these chess players played at Goðan’s anniversary tournament in March 2025, except for Vignir Vatnar, who was unable to attend the tournament last year.
The organizers of the tournament are expecting about 50 players, but are prepared for 70-80 in total. There is enough space in Skjóbrekka for more than 100 players, although it is very unlikely that more than 80 players will participate in the tournament. But you never know.
